PRODRONE Enters Basic Agreement With GMO GlobalSign To Conduct Demonstration Tests For Secure Drone Operation

PRODORNE Co., Ltd. (“PRODRONE”) is pleased to announce that PRODRONE has started to demonstration tests for secure communication of drone operations with GMO GlobalSign (“GlobalSign”), a global Certificate Authority (CA) and leading provider of digital signing.

GlobalSign is a global Certificate Authority (CA) and leading provider of digital signing, identity and security solutions for the IoT. PRODRONE and GlobalSign have signed a basic agreement to provide technologies for enhancing secure communication of drone operations in the view of the drone era.

The latest roadmap for the social implementation of drones outlines the details of environmental improvements and technological development for the realization of Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) flights in populated areas by 2022.

PRODRONE recognizes that a major issue is to develop countermeasures against security risks in drone operations, such as hacking of the aircraft and its operating system and falsification and theft of communication data sent from the aircraft.

The development of countermeasures against security risks related to drone communications is essential for BVLOS flights, which are expected to become more normal in the future, and this is what led us to conduct this demonstration experiment.

At the demonstration, a security chip containing GMO GlobalSign’s digital certificate will be installed in the PRODRONE’s UAV, and the demo will be conducted to mutually authenticate and encrypt communications between the drone controller and the aircraft, as well as to keep data transmission from the drone confidential.

PRODRONE will use the digital certificates provided free of charge by GMO GlobalSign and a wide range of information and knowledge on security technologies to implement technologies for the confidentiality of drone operation, payload information, acquired data, and customer and billing data during actual operations.
